Transgender Equality
The Government Equalities Office is the lead
Government Department for transgender equality matters.
What we are doing for transgendered
people
The Government is committed to improving the
lives of transgendered people. To help achieve this the
Working
for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality: Moving
Forward action plan was published on 14 March. This
ambitious programme of work outlined the actions Government will
take to address outdated prejudices and tear down barriers to
equality.
This builds on the work set out in
Working for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Equality, which was launched by the Prime Minister on 16th
June 2010.
The action plan includes a range of
commitments which will benefit lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender people (LGB and T). While LGB and T equality is often
dealt with together, we understand that transgender people can face
distinct and separate issues.
Transgender Equality Action Plan
Working for
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality: Moving
Forward included a commitment to publish the
first ever Government transgender equality action plan
later this year. The action plan will outline commitments that
the Government will deliver, within specific timescales, to improve
equality for trans people.
To ensure that the action plan addresses the
needs of the trans community, officials from the Government
Equalities Office will actively engage with a wide range
of transgender partners, organisations and individuals. As part of
this engagement we will be disseminating 'e-bulletins' to the
trans community. These e-bulletins include messages from
Ministers, items of interest, news and surveys so transgender
people can contribute their views and ideas. We will
use the findings of our surveys to shape the Government transgender
equality action plan and formulate initial Government
commitments.
Our e-bulletins can be found here.
