Maria Eagle in support of Pride
In advance of Brighton Pride on Saturday 1st July, Maria Eagle,
Deputy Minister for Women and Equality, said:
“We have a strong record on strengthening rights for lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transsexual people.
“From repealing section 28, to introducing Civil Partnerships
and gender recognition laws, to lifting the ban on gay people
serving in the armed forces, we have taken action to tackle
discrimination in all its guises.
“Building on this success, the Equality Bill will introduce a
public sector Equality Duty which will position the rights of LGBT
people on an equal footing with the rest of society.
“Pride is a great way of celebrating how far we have come in
achieving equality, but there can be no room for complacency. More
still needs to be done to fight homophobia and transphobia and
ensure we continue the march towards creating a fairer, more
tolerant, more inclusive society.”
